For those folks who have been trying to make sense of the seemingly many terms thrown around that name the latest ECMA specifications check out the following blog post.
If you code in Javascript or ActionScript or any other language that is based upon the ECMA standards keep a close eye the ECMA Harmony specification, from what I can deduce the biggest names on the web (Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Adobe, Mozilla) are developing technology that implements the standards very closely which could mean that in the near future you would likely be able to switch between developing an AJAX or Flash application with not much of a learning curve at all.
If that sounds like a blast from the past this time they may just do it properly for a change.
The only difference would be the set of objects you have available (Actually this is already the case, but it would probably be even closer). We should be able to port many code libraries between platforms and it will really just be a case of should we do this in the browser or Flash player?
I personally think it’s time for the lamers who argue AJAX vs Flash to give up and start sharing ideas, this is where the future will take us…
With iFac you can compile and build your Flex SDK projects using Apache Ant and FSCH instead of MXMLC.
FSCH is an additional compiler within the FlexSDK that only injects code that has changed since your previous compile speeding up the time it takes to compile your Flex projects.
You can find a great description of how iFac works over on flashmagazine.com and iFac can be installed with the instructions from the project website over here.
If you have never used FSCH to compile your Flex projects I strongly urge you to look into how it can speed up your workflow.
I don’t understand why people are still so fond of Flash and why there is the illusion that it can become a leading technology in building rich web applications. Let me give you some advice, don’t bet on the Adobe Flash suite to become widely accepted UI practice. via: http://dominiek.com/363-the-grim-future-of-adobe-flash
Thought I would post this here since the fancy AJAX comments on that blog were not working when I tried to respond. continued…
I highly recommend giving Flint particles a go. It is by far one of the best available particle systems for ActionScript, as the project matures and more people get used to the architecture I am sure we will be seeing more of it in the future.
Here’s a good example of Flint in action.
